Day Trips from St. Gallen
There is plenty to do in St. Gallen itself, but it is so ideally situated in the northeast of the country that the area offers many great day trips. In fact, from here you can easily reach the 3 bordering countries of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. There are not many destinations that offer this treat. The Appenzell region is just 25 kilometers from St. Gallen and makes for a good start to this round trip. Start by taking the cable car up Kronberg Mountain for sweeping views across the surrounding Alps and foothills.
A Taste for Swiss Cheese
Make sure you visit the Appenzell Cheese Factory: Appenzeller Schaukaeserei. Knowledgeable guides will take you on an informative tour where you will learn about the custom of cheese making in Switzerland and the lives of these alpine dairymen, in particular, from this region. Of course, there is plenty of opportunity for tasting and buying some cheese to take with you.
Three Countries in one Day
Moving on from Appenzell, it is natural to explore the Vaduz, Liechtenstein’s capital city. From here, there is a round trip to Ischgl in Austria, the perfect destination for summer and winter pursuits such as skiing and mountain biking. One option is to continue on to Konstanz or Munich in Germany before returning to St. Gallen.
If you plan to stay in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, the most simple and recommended day trip is to visit Lake Constance, one of Europe’s largest lakes, located just 10 kilometers from town. Although not far, it is possible to spend the whole day there, exploring extensive walking and hiking trails, boating on the lake or just relaxing with a picnic and taking in the great views of the vivid blue water, surrounded by trees and mountains – a typical Swiss setting. And of course by walking around the lake you will cross the borders into Austria and Germany.
Art of Chocolate Making
For something different, take a drive 21 kilometers in the opposite direction from Lake Constance to Maestrani Chocolate Makers. Learn about the art of Swiss chocolatiers and uncover the secrets of over 150 years of successful chocolate making. The factory doors are always open to welcome visitors, but to make the most of your trip join a guided tour. Don’t forget to sample the many delicious delights offered before leaving.
At the Radisson Blu Hotel, St. Gallen, staff are always on hand to assist you with the planning of your day trips. No matter what you decide to do in or around this fascinating Swiss canton, or if you cross the borders, the opportunities are endless and you will not be disappointed in what this area has to offer.
