The Arctic-Alpine Botanic Gardens

When it comes to colorful, exotic flowers one would expect a hot and humid climate to be involved, which is why you will be surprised to find beautiful and hardy plant life so far north. Tromsø’s Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden offers visitors a beautiful view with a variety of plants of all colors. In the Arctic collection, you can find plants from all over the world. There are even species from extreme climates, such as those from Norway’s northernmost island, Svalbard. You may find the weather breezy, but these plants actually find it much too warm.

There is also a ‘traditional garden’ inside where ornamental leaves and plants that played a historic role in Norway’s culture can be found. Walk among their herb collection, some old rose species and the poisonous ‘Wolf’s Bane’ plant. See the yellow ‘Draculas’, Rhododendrons, Buttercups and more. There are thousands of plant species here and the space is perfect for a walk in the fresh air.

Hardy plants

You will be taken by surprise when you see how well the South American plants thrive in these botanical gardens. The weather here, however, is not unlike that up the rugged and mountainous terrain of Patagonia in South America. There are even some plants native to the Himalayas now calling this botanical wonder home. A trip to these gardens is ideal if you want a relaxing day outside, or are a plant lover and enthusiast.

Treat your nose to a day full of sweet smells and fresh air as you walk among the greens and purples. Take a day to relax and follow up your garden tour with a drink at the stylish bar at Radisson Blu Hotel, Tromsø.
