History comes to life at Steinvikholm Castle’s midnight opera
Over 470 years ago, Norway’s last catholic archbishop, Olav Engelbrektsson, ensconced himself in his private residence, the stronghold of Steinvikholm Castle, in a final stand against Danish oppression. The defender of Norway’s independence could not hold the onslaught, however, and eventually fled to the Netherlands, leaving Norway open to the Danish rule.
Each August, the Steinvikholm Castle transforms into a grand stage, stirring up the past with the midnight Opera Olav Engelbrektsson. Some of Norway’s best opera singers, 150 actors, the cloak of midnight and the castle itself all unite and evoke the life and struggles of the archbishop in one of the largest outdoor performances in Northern Europe.
