Gate of Dawn

The Gate of Dawn is one of the most religious places in Lithuania, due to the painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary that is placed in the chapel next to the gate. It is believed that the painting does not only bring luck to the visitors, but that it also brings help for those in need, heals the sick, and listens to the deepest sorrows. The rumour about this religious painting attracts pilgrims to see it with their own eyes, and it also draws hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.

The Gate was built as a part of nine defensive walls for the city of Vilnius, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, between 1503 and 1522. Out of all nine gates, only the Gate of Dawn remains, while the others were destroyed at the end of the 18th century.
