Vilnius Cathedral

The Cathedral of Vilnius, located in Vilnius' Old Town in Cathedral Square, is the main Roman Catholic church of Lithuania. The Cathedral was built in the middle of the 13th century by order of King Mindaugas when he accepted Christianity in 1251. After this event, the church held the coronations of most of the grand dukes of Lithuania. Inside the crypts and catacombs of the Cathedral, a lot of famous Lithuanian and Polish dukes and their families were found to be buried.

For tourists interested in artwork from the 16th through the 19th centuries, the Cathedral is a must-see attraction. It holds more than 40 pieces of art, including paintings and frescoes that were recovered in the underground chapels during renovation and that date back to the 14th century.
