Switzerland is known for being a mountainous country, with beautiful Alpine scenery providing some of the most arresting sights in the world. From the top of the Uetliberg Mountain just outside Zurich you can find one of the best panoramic views of the city, as well as views of the alps in the distant horizon. There are several wonderful scenic points dotted around Zurich, as the city is surrounded by the Uetliberg, Käferberg, Zürichberg and Adlisberg mountains. A trek up one of these mountains is a rewarding quest to fully appreciate the city and its spectacular natural setting.
The view from the topAlthough the summit of the Uetliberg sits at an impressive 869 meters above sea level, the ascent from Zurich is easy as there is local train station just a ten-minute walk from the mountaintop. It is also possible to take a longer route through the pleasant countryside all around the mountain. Cycling enthusiasts will be pleased to discover two official bike trails that are separate from the walking paths. In the winter the City of Zurich makes a spectacular 3.1 kilometer sledding trails down the mount, just rent a sled from the restaurant on the top and whizz down.
To climb Uetliberg, hop on Tram number 13 in the direction of Albisguetli and follow the paths that lead to the peak. The top of the mountain is usually reachable in about an hour if you want to walk all the way, and on a clear day you can see virtually the whole city, as well as the distant Alps.
