A historical venue

Opera in Latvia can be traced back to the 18th century when the first musical productions were staged in the Duchy of Courland, and the first traveling opera troupes arrived in Riga. The German Theater, which is called the National Opera House opened in 1782. Today, you can enjoy operas from two stages. The main stage seats 933 spectators while the smaller, more intimate New Hall seats 300 and plays host to visiting chamber operas, small concerts and lectures all through the year.

Enjoy the Riga Opera Festival

1998 marked the first year of the Riga Opera Festival, the first of its size and scale in all of Eastern Europe. Since then, it has grown into a valued tradition in both Latvia and abroad, with visitors traveling from afar to take part. The festival takes part in the summer, and marks the end of the Latvian National Opera’s performance season. Different operas are played each day during the festival, which spans close to two weeks. This is an experience that any opera lover don’t want to miss out on when in Latvia.
