Shopping in Oslo
Like any European capital, Oslo offers the full spectrum when it comes to shopping from classic Scandinavian design, vintage treasures, high street faithfuls and high-end fashion. Karl Johans Gate is the city’s main thoroughfare and the starting point for many. International and local high-street stores line this street and the surrounding ones, including Vero Moda, H&M, Esprit and Zara. It is also home to Steen & Strøm department store, a popular stop for Scandinavian labels.
Aker Brygge is the place to be on a summer’s day. This regenerated wharf area of the city is now a hotspot for locals and visitors. In the 30+ stores, you will find everything for beauty, fashion and jewelry to interior and design pieces.
Just behind the Royal Palace, through the beautiful Slottsparken, the Royal Park, is Bogstadveien shopping street. It stretches all the way to Majorstuen suburb. Here you can pick up some Scandinavian interior treats at Kähler, or exclusive fashion at stores such as Samsøe & Samsøe. If you are lucky to be visiting during the Farmer’s Market on Valkyrie Plass, which takes place twice a month, make sure you get yourself some local tasty produce to add to your home kitchen.
Grünerløkka has a very relaxed vibe and is the perfect place for a day out. This vibrant part of the city is located on the east side and is full of atmospheric cafés, vintage and second-hand stores, craft and gift shops and shops dedicated to local Norwegian designers. It is also here that you will find Mathallen, Oslo’s illustrious food hall, filled with stalls from various local food producers.
Exploring the malls
For convenient shopping, Byporten and Oslo City Shopping Malls have over 160 outlets between them, as well as restaurants and cafés for much-needed refueling between shops.
