Parque del Retiro
The Parque del Retiro is Madrid's most visited park and one of the city's most exciting spaces. Originally constructed as a royal place of pleasure, this park combines natural beauty with stunning statues and monuments. Come and walk through the lush landscaped gardens, relax with a coffee and enjoy the sunshine on your next trip to the Spanish capital.
Things to do at the parkThe Retiro Park gained prominence under the watchful eye of the Count Duke of Olivares and became a playground for royalty. Today it is packed full of wondrous sights for you and your companions to enjoy, with the Monument to Alfonzo XII perhaps the most magnificent. Opened in 1922, the 30 meter high equestrian statue strikes an imposing figure flanked by four stone lions. In terms of architecture, the beautiful Crystal Palace and Velázquez Palace are two of the Parque del Retiro's main attractions. The neoclassical buildings were originally designed as exhibition halls and continue to display arts and crafts for all those who stop by. The Velázquez Palace is certainly worth checking out, as it hosts exhibitions from the famous Reina Sofia Museum.
The Parque del Retiro is also home to a wide variety of street performers and local stalls. Why not enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides through the grounds? You can also appreciate the free concerts at the grandstand or hire a rowboat on the park's artificial lake.
