Discovering Petra for the first time
The city of Petra is said to have been established around the 6th century BC and was the capital of the Nabataean civilisation. Later, it became an important junction on the Silk Road and the spice route that linked China and India with the Middle East and Rome. Visitors must enter Petra through the Siq, a narrow gorge measuring over 1 kilometre in length, with imposing 80 metre cliffs on either side.
Emerge from the Siq and Al-Khazneh - The Treasury - is right ahead. The treasury is an iconic landmark of Petra, a 30-metre-wide, 43-metre-high façade carved into an ancient pink rock face. Carved in the first century, it holds the tomb of a significant Nabataean king. Other major attractions in Petra include its Roman-style amphitheatre, the Ad-Deir Monastery and several temples and colonnaded streets. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
