Art Museum

The Art Museum in Bergen is located by Lille Lungegårdsvann, a picturesque lake in the centre of the town. It is just a short walk from the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Bergen. This is one of the largest museums in Scandinavia that is dedicated to the arts. It is housed in three large buildings: Lysverket, Rasmus Meyer Samlinger and Stenersens Samling.

The art collection dates from the 1400s to modern times. There are many rare and unique pieces that appeal to many. For example, there are drawings by Rembrandt, Goya, Dürer and Cezanne. Follow the historic art walk that guides visitors from the Renaissance, through to the present day. The exhibited art works range from Russian and Greek masterpieces to the Nordic golden age of art and modernism.

Silver and Gold of Bergen
Visit the museum’s Silver Treasure Gallery, which displays gleaming gold and silver. These pieces have been manufactured in Bergen for over 500 years. The exhibition was opened in 2009, by Queen Sonja. This spectacular collection is made up of artefacts that have played an important role in private as well as public rituals. Included in the collection are silver tankards, cups, spoons and stunning jewellery. It is no coincidence that this collection can be found in Bergen as the city has played a vital role in the production of gold and silver.

Available in the museum’s Babel Gallery, is a modern art selection from Norwegian and international artists. The gallery is named after the Tower of Babel which was located in the geographical power centre, Babylon. Art, in modern times, has also had different power centres, such as Paris, New York, London and Berlin. Due to increased globalisation since the 1980s, China, India and Japan have also stepped forward as prominent art nations.
