The National Museum of Finland


The National Museum of Finland displays artefacts from throughout the millennia of Finnish history, and should be considered a must-see for everyone visiting Helsinki. Through the museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions, you can learn about Finnish history and the culture of its people through the centuries. With titles such as The Treasure Troves, The Realm and A Land and Its People, you will discover everything from armour and jewellery to art and folk costumes.
 

Prehistory collections

The Museum’s Prehistory collection displays pieces from the early days of the civilisation, from the country was resettled after the Ice Age 9000 years ago, and through the Stone, Bronze and Iron ages. Moving into The Realm exhibit, which covers the period from the Middle Ages to the 19th century you will learn about the role of the church during the middle ages, the emergence of the Swedish state and Finland’s territorial development. The exhibition also covers the country’s rulers and monarchs, the rise of industry and Finland as a part of Russia in the early 1800’s.
 

Folk culture

A special section in the National Museum called A Land and its People focuses on folk culture and the lives of everyday Finns in the country throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In one room you’ll find the exhibition Life in the Land of the Sámi – Northern Finland, which tells the story of the indigenous ethnic group that live in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. In addition to these permanent displays, temporary exhibitions often visit the National Museum of Finland, with many displays focusing on artefacts from around Finland or Scandinavia.
