Meskel Square

Visit Meskel Square and discover the vibrant beating heart of Addis Ababa. The central square plays a prominent role in Ethiopia's capital city, and is a popular meeting point for both tourists and locals throughout the year. Meskel Square is also a site for public gatherings and demonstrations, as well as the famous Meskel Festival, which takes place annually in September.

Thanks to its central location, Meskel Square is also accessible from many of the city's most prominent businesses, shops and points of interest.

Meskel Festival in the Square
The Meskel Festival from which the Square takes its name has been celebrated in Ethiopia for some 1,600 years. Meskel, meaning 'cross', commemorates the discovery of the True Cross by Empress Helena of Constantinople and the beginning of spring with its distinctive yellow daisies.

Each year thousands gather in Meskel Square on 27 September for the festival, beginning in early afternoon and carrying on through the night until dawn the following day. The square is decorated with distinctive yellow daisies and a large pyramid stands in the centre.

A large procession led by brightly coloured priests, brass bands and students takes place before the lighting of the pyramid, a ritual that continues overnight.
