Turku's beautiful milieus, combined with its numerous events, vibrant nightlife and diverse shopping opportunities make the city a particularly interesting place to visit. All of Turku’s opportunities are available to you just a few steps from the elegant and luxurious Radisson Blu Marina Palace Hotel, which is located on the banks of the Aura River in the heart of Turku.
In the centre of Turku, you can sense the medieval atmosphere; when you walk the cobbled streets of Finland's oldest city, on the riverside walk and the Market Square, you will sense it. Turku Castle and the Cathedral are the city's most famous attractions, which will transport your thoughts to a bygone age. The buzz of different kinds of markets held on the riverside also reminds the visitor of olden times. During summer, the riverside is full of life and attracts visitors to eat, drink and listen to music in a relaxed setting.
Turku is considered to have been founded in 1229. It is still a major commercial port city, with frequent passenger-ferry services to Mariehamn and Stockholm. It is easy to experience the Turku archipelago, not just from the deck of a passenger ferry, but also right from the city centre. Old sailing ships depart from the shores of the Aura River, bound for the archipelago, or even for Naantali. The Turku archipelago is renowned for its rugged nature, but it also provides visitors an oasis where they can relax by playing golf, visiting a spa, or enjoying delicious food.
Turku’s European Capital of Culture status in 2011 elevated the importance of culture in the city’s street scene, and the impact can still be felt. The events and sights of Turku attract a lot of domestic as well as foreign tourists. In summer the town is bursting with events and festivals: music, theatre, art, design, markets and much more. Turku is Finland's official Christmas City, which is reflected in the city's events programme at the end of the year.
Turku’s major attractions are the city centre and the archipelago, as well as the neighbouring town, Naantali. Naantali’s major attractions are its historically important old town, the President of the Republic of Finland's summer residence Kultaranta, and the Moomin World theme park, which is based on the classic stories by Finnish author Tove Jansson. Turku has something for everyone: the urban city traveller, the nature-loving hiker or the visitor with young children. However you travel, the crowning jewel of your trip is a stay at the Radisson Blu Marina Palace Hotel.
Start your shopping trip in the Market Square. The major department stores such as Sokos, Stockmann and Anttila border on the Market Square. Stockmann can be found in the Shopping Centre Hansa, Turku’s largest, oldest and most unique. There you can enjoy a variety of events and exhibitions, as well as shopping. Finland's oldest theatre, Åbo Svenska Teater, is also located in Hansa.
Also bordering the Market Square is the KOP Triangle Shopping Centre. The building was the winning design in a competition organised by the KOP Bank. The sturdy, triangular-shaped building was completed in 1964 and became the new headquarters of the bank, representing very different kinds of modern architecture. Today, the KOP Triangle shops offer the latest in fashion trends. After shopping, you can relax in one of the cosy cafés.
The pleasant pedestrian section of the Yliopistonkatu Street has a number of interesting shops. In addition, there are a number of charming little boutiques on the neighbouring streets. Pop into Ideaestrad in Humalistonkatu Street for Finnish design, arts and crafts. Or KUI Design shop, which offers personalised home textiles and accessories. The shop is located in the idyllic Mannila factory building on the east bank of The Aura River, and the same yard also contains other organisations in the fields of arts and culture. Perhaps you would like to take home a personalised gift for a child? You can find suitable gifts at the toy store Casagrande, which is an almost century-old traditional toy shop in Castle Street.
Do you like gourmet food? You can find the Turku Market Hall by taking a few steps from the Market Square down towards the harbour. The Market Hall is a definite attraction for food lovers! The building was designed by architect Gustaf Nyström, and it was opened in 1896. In the Market Hall there are about 40 different vendors. In addition to meat, fish, cheese and baked goods, the range includes handicrafts and ethnic fast food.
If you want to go a little further afield, there is a nice modern shopping centre called Skanssi about five kilometres from the city centre. Next to Skanssi is the child-friendly adventure park Flowpark.
In Turku, you will find shopping destinations that suit your style, as well as new influences. Radisson Blu will act as a source of inspiration – it is the perfect base for a relaxing shopping trip.
The Turku city centre was originally on the east bank of the Aura River, which explains the Turku saying "on this side of the river" and "on the other side of the river." The older east side is "this side" and the west side is the "other side". Among the things on the eastern shore are the Cathedral, the University, the Old Great Square of Turku, as well as history and modern art at the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Museums. On the western shore, in the oldest wooden house in the heart of Turku, there is the Pharmacy Museum, guarding the mouth of the Aura River, the Forum Marinum maritime centre and the museum ship Swan of Finland, as well as the current Market Square and a cluster of shops.
In fine weather, the riverside is a lively meeting place for the locals. Explore the historical artefacts, but also the food and drink culture of the riverfront. An unmatched speciality of Turku is restaurants operating on river boats. On ships, you can enjoy a nice cooling drink, and on many of them you can also dine.
An avid walker will find several points of interest in the centre of Turku, such as the Vartiovuorenmäki and Samppalinnanmäki parks and the Kuralan Kylämäki cultural recreation area. You can also reach the Turku archipelago from the city centre by boat along the Aura River, and the pristine nature of Ruissalo by bus. Ruissalo was formerly a royal household hunting island and belonged to Turku Castle. Its main attractions include the atmospheric promenade of the National Park, the 19th century wooden lace-fronted houses and the Ruissalo spa.
Those travelling with children can find all kinds of nice things to do in Turku. The Dog Hill children's city tour is a guided tour that offers information about Turku and history in an amusing way. Energetic families can find all sorts of adventures, such as the ecological adventure park Flow Park, which is close to the shopping centre Skanssi. There you can have fun on an aerial adventure trail. Or perhaps you fancy water games? The water park JukuPark is open from June to August. Take your children to Kupittaa Adventure Park, too, where lush parkland and a playground offer opportunities that are normally not found in ordinary play parks. In addition, the neighbouring town of Naantali has an adventure island for primary school children, Väiski, and the ever-popular Moomin World.
Food enthusiasts will find a number of restaurants in Turku that tempt the taste buds and take their fancy. Many of the city's best restaurants operate from interesting historical buildings. Explore Turku’s oldest cellar restaurant in the basement of restaurant Brahe, or enjoy a delicious meal in a 100-year-old wooden house. Indulge on the riverside at the modern Mami, trendy Pinella or charming Tårget. You can also enjoy the Aura River landscape from our hotel’s Grill it! Marina Restaurant, which boldly combines traditional barbecuing with flavours of the world.
Turku's best baristas can be found at the Café Art on the banks of the Aura River, where you can buy the Turku Coffee Roastery’s fresh ground coffee to take away. In the heart of the city, in historic surroundings, you will find Café Fontana, serving coffee and lunch, and the new cake café Gaggui, which won locals over instantly. Seeking to emulate the atmosphere of the 1920s, on the edge of the Market Square is the Elvina Café, where you can also buy antiques.
If your heart beats to the tune of music, you will definitely find events in Turku to your liking, including Ruisrock, Down By The Jetty, the Turku Music Festival and Seikkisrock for children. Sports lovers find plenty of action at the Paavo Nurmi Games, the Aurasoutu rowing event, and the Turun Sanomat urban cycling competition. If you want to experience the past, check out the medieval market at the end of August. Don’t also forget the Christmas markets, which are held at the Old Market Square in November-December.
Thinking of spending an evening in Turku? During summer, you should definitely experience a local speciality – the river boats that are moored on the Aura River, many of which function as a bar or restaurant. Along the Aura River there is also royalty among barbeques – the Grill it! restaurant.
As well as restaurant ships, characteristic for Turku are pubs that have taken over old institutions, such as the Old School, New Pharmacy, Old Bank and Puutori Toilet. Do you itch to get on the dance floor? Popular hotspots are Showroom, Hamburger Börs, Venus, Marilyn, as well as Apollo and Club, both of which specialise in live music. Indie bands and students meet face-to-face at the Dynamo, in a rickety old wooden house in the Linnankatu Street.
