Winter tourism is a growth business in the municipality and on Trysil Mountain is Norway's biggest ski resort. There are 31 ski lifts, including six child lifts, which extend around 1100 metres above sea level. The largest cabin villages are Håvi and Trysilfjell south of the mountain, and Fageråsen north of Trysil Mountain. Trysil is known for its authors Einar Skjæraasen and Haldis Moren Vesaas and skiers such as Trysil-Knut and Hallgeir Brenden. Ola Lunde, known for being a biathlon expert in NRK and former biathlon coach for the national team, is also from Trysil. Trysilgutten is the world's oldest ski club and was built in 1861, six years after the world's first official public ski run was organised in Trysil in 1855. The municipality's motto is appropriately "Stavtaket foran" ("ski poles to the fore").
Trysil has been inhabited for thousands of years. The first inhabitants lived on hunting and fishing and eventually farming. The natural surroundings were challenging and the heavy winters with masses of snow and long distances meant skiing became an important mode of transport.
Trysil's warm hospitality is felt all over. Why are the Tryslingene so hospitable? Perhaps because of the vast distances and isolation. Every visit was appreciated, and still is today.
